What is the format of the critiques?

Each participant will make a short introduction and present up to ten digital images for critical feedback from the faculty. Participation in each critique is limited to the faculty and the presenter. The other participants will observe and listen. Each participant will present their work twice.

What is addressed in the faculty lectures?

Faculty will offer in-depth lectures on particular aspects of art history, theory, and criticism that relate to studio practice.

What is the structure of the Q & A?

It offers an opportunity for participants to ask any questions of the faculty that emerge during the day. Participants will be prepared to lead one Q & A session.

Where is the studio located?

What are the studio hours?

The Whale & Star studio hours are 9 am to 6 pm although the office will have extended hours during the Summer Program.

What should I bring?

The attire at Whale & Star is informal and casual. A notebook and a writing utensil for note taking during critiques and discussions is recommended.

What is the weather like in South Florida in August?

Although the weather in South Florida during the summer is fairly unpredictable, the average temperature during the day is 90 degrees and at night 80 degrees.  The daytime relative humidity is generally 65 percent which yields a strong chance for daily afternoon thunderstorms or showers, which typically clear rather quickly.  We would advise to drink plenty of liquids, wear sunscreen and bring sunglasses.

Do you provide meals?

Whale & Star will host a simple breakfast and a light lunch at the studio daily. Please notify the studio with any diet restrictions and/or allergies so that we may accommodate your diet.

How can I pay for the Summer Program and what is your cancellation policy?

Whale & Star accepts personal, bank and travelers checks; we can also accommodate Visa, MasterCard, American Express payments. The balance of tuition is due 30 days prior to the start of the workshop. If payment in full is not received by that date, you will forfeit your space and deposit. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made within 15 days of the start of the workshop. If the Summer Program were to be affected by a hurricane, Whale & Star reserves the right to cancel the workshop. The Summer Program will not be rescheduled and participants will receive a full refund of the tuition.

Do you provide transportation?

Whale & Star will provide a shuttle to and from the hotel on a daily basis. The shuttle will pick up participants at 8:15 AM from the hotel and 6:00 PM from Whale & Star.
